We were asked recently “Who is Burn The Ship for?” Without hesitation, I answered, “for everyone!”, and we truly believe that. (And if you're wondering who "we" and "I" are, we are Jake and Colby Johnson, founders of Burn The Ship, and this is Colby writing here.) No matter your age, ethnicity, beliefs, address, or background, every person has a ship to burn. No one has this life thing down pat. As our wise momma said recently, oftentimes after you burn one ship, you realize there is another you need to work on. And we are here to encourage you in that journey.
So as stated above, we fully believe this movement is for everyone, regardless of your beliefs. Anyone can be burning ships in their lives and encouraging others to do the same. But for us, the power and motivation to burn our ships comes from Jesus Christ. Personally, we have found that on our own we do not have the will-power to fully remove the things from our lives that we should, or to hold the constant temptations at bay. But with God working in us and through us, we are able to burn our ships and stay the course. We may not follow perfectly, as we are broken people, but we are working towards a whole life by the grace of God.
With that said, we have intentionally kept our social media channels inspirational, but with few direct Scripture references, and with only occasional mentions of our own faith. This is because we want to reach everyone with this movement, believers and non-believers alike. As Bob Goff jokingly put it, “We can be the light of the world without leaving our high beams on and annoying everybody.” We want our social media presence to be approachable, while still challenging. But our blog and future podcast are a bit of a different story. Because the roots and the fruit of our personal ship burning journey lies in our faith in Christ, we cannot create a substantial blog or podcast that is not based in Scripture and our beliefs.
Here’s our heart for Burn The Ship: We want to encourage believers in their journey to follow Christ and become more like him AND to come alongside everyone else as they work to burn their ships. We pray as all of us remove the ships and distractions from our lives, that our hearts would be more opened to God, whether for the first time or if you've been in relationship with Him for years. Obviously if someone encounters Jesus for the first time through Burn The Ship, and surrenders not just their ship, but their whole life, to Him, that would be the ultimate answer to prayer. But if the majority of those joining the movement are simply getting rid of the bad habits, thoughts, or addictions in their life, we still believe that is a mission worth giving our time and effort to.
God has given each of us different gifts and passions. One of Jake and I's passions is to see people freed from the chains of destructive habits, actions, and thought processes, as well as things that may not be inherently “bad” but are distracting you from better things in life. We have seen firsthand the joy, freedom, and desire for adventure that is born from removing the “bad” or “lesser” things from our lives, and we want others to experience that as well. And for us, that joy and freedom is ultimately found in Christ, as that is His will for us. He wants us to live a full and abundant life, and that’s much easier to do without the things of this world holding us back, whether it be a substance, a lust (for sex, money, prestige, etc.), or our own minds. We are here to encourage you, to motivate you, to walk alongside you as you leave behind the things that are weighing you down.
So long story long, thank you for being here. Thank you for being a part of this movement and journey with us. Honestly, we are taking this thing one day at a time, praying that we follow God’s leading in what He has for Burn The Ship. We hope to soon start either providing or connecting people to resources for burning their specific ships, and in the meantime will be writing some substantial blog posts in addition to what we put on social media. Again, the blog posts are going to be more overtly “Christian” or Christ-centered, so if you find that offensive, feel free to stick to following along on Instagram; we are happy to have you here either way! But if you are looking for something more depthy, and ultimately, more encouraging and helpful, the blog is the place for you. And as stated at the beginning of this post, we hope to get a podcast going soon as well!
One more thing- if you have any feedback, questions, suggestions, or just want to reach out, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or comment below. We would love to hear from you!
In closing, I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite Bible verses, 2nd Timothy 1:7 (ESV). “For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.” We do not have to fear the world, what people think of us, or what will happen when we start burning our ships. God has equipped us for this journey. He has given you power and love and self-control. He believes in you, and so do we.
